Blueprint for the Future: Governor Healey Announces Winners of the Massachusetts ADU Design Challenge
In a significant move to accelerate the state’s housing production, Governor Maura Healey and the Healey-Driscoll Administration announced the winners of the inaugural Massachusetts ADU Design Challenge on May 1, 2026. This announcement marks a critical milestone in the Commonwealth’s effort to make Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) a cornerstone of affordable, sustainable living. By awarding eight winning designs from a pool of over 100 submissions, the state is providing homeowners with a library of "pre-approved" prototypes that promise to slash pre-development costs and simplify the journey from concept to construction.
Lowering the Barrier to Entry
The Design Challenge, launched in late 2025, was born out of a simple reality: while the Affordable Homes Act legalized ADUs by-right, the high cost of custom architectural plans and the complexity of local permitting remained a bottleneck for many. The winning designs—which include all-electric, climate-resilient, and accessible layouts—will soon be available for free download.
“Accessory dwelling units help families stay together, create more housing options, and lower costs,” Governor Healey stated during the announcement. “By providing these replicable, high-quality blueprints, we are making it easier for homeowners to take the next step in helping us meet our housing goals.”
A Multi-Pronged Support System
The design winners represent only one piece of the administration’s 2026 ADU "full-court press." The update also highlighted the launch of MyMassADU.org, a centralized resource center developed in partnership with the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center. This portal serves as a one-stop-shop for homeowners to explore the new design library, calculate potential ROI, and learn about sustainable "climatetech" features like heat pumps and high-efficiency insulation.
This announcement follows the successful March 2026 launch of the MassHousing ADU Financing Program, which offers second mortgages of up to $250,000 at a fixed 5.25% rate. Together, these initiatives address the three biggest hurdles to ADU production: zoning, design, and capital.
Proven Momentum
The latest data released alongside the challenge winners confirms that the "backyard boom" is in full swing. In 2025, the first full year of the by-right law, more than 1,200 ADUs were approved across 217 communities statewide. With the introduction of free, professional designs, state officials expect that number to double by the end of 2027.
For Massachusetts homeowners, the message from the State House is clear: the backyard is no longer just for grass—it’s for growth. By removing the guesswork from the design phase, the Healey-Driscoll Administration is ensuring that the next generation of housing is as smart, sustainable, and accessible as the Commonwealth itself.
